Mr Kumar Kunasingam/Consultant Foot & Ankle Surgeon

Mr Kumar Kunasingam is a fellowship trained consultant foot and ankle surgeon covering Surrey and London, seeing patients from across the UK and internationally. He grew up in Kent and trained throughout the South East of London and England.

He set up and now leads the foot and ankle unit at Croydon University Hospital, and is double fellowship trained — minimally invasive bunion surgery in Sydney, Australia, including the treatment of elite athletes, and trauma surgery at the King's College London major trauma centre.

Outside theatre he is married with three sporty children. He played university rugby and hockey to first team level, still plays club hockey when family time allows, and coaches his children's rugby — a passion for sport that led to his qualification in Sports Medicine after completing his orthopaedic training.

Treatments

All aspects of foot and ankle care, delivered with evidence based method.

Keyhole bunion surgery

Minimally invasive chevron and Akin (MICA) correction for hallux valgus, including revision bunion surgery through a keyhole approach. Internationally published in this technique.

Minimally invasive forefoot surgery

Lesser toe correction for hammer, mallet and curly toes, metatarsalgia, Morton's neuroma and forefoot reconstruction — through incisions of a few millimetres.

Keyhole ankle surgery

Ankle arthroscopy for impingement, cartilage injuries, OCD lesions and microfracture, with rapid, structured rehabilitation.

Achilles tendon surgery

Minimally invasive Achilles repair and reconstruction for rupture and tendinopathy, plus ankle ligament repair with accelerated rehab for sprains.

Foot & ankle trauma

Ankle and foot fracture surgery, stress fractures and non-unions, using less invasive fixation for smaller wounds and earlier weight-bearing.

Sports injuries & arthritis

Peroneal and foot tendon injury, flat foot reconstruction, plantar fasciitis, and foot and ankle arthritis including fusion where required.

Virtually all cases are performed as day case procedures, with early — and often immediate — weight-bearing.

Surgical principles

“Less is more. I'm passionate about keyhole surgery to accurately operate through tiny incisions — less soft tissue damage, early weight-bearing, and a faster return to a good quality of life.”

After house officer training in Tunbridge Wells, Mr Kunasingam taught anatomy under Professor Harold Ellis at Guy's, King's and St Thomas', completed basic surgical training in Sussex, and was selected for specialist registrar training through the London deanery and South East Thames.

He is an active trauma surgeon at Croydon University Hospital, teaches keyhole foot and ankle surgery internationally, and is written up in both the scientific literature and the international press for his work in keyhole surgery.

Patient feedback

Great service, compassionate and friendly staff and an exceptional surgeon, Mr Kunasingam, with outstanding results. I must also mention the kind and caring anaesthetist who made me feel at ease before the procedure, along with the rest of his team.

Very clear in explaining the keyhole bunion operation. A very caring manner that made me feel confident and comfortable in going ahead. On the day I received outstanding care and the result could not have been better. Aftercare was also outstanding. I highly recommend Mr Kunasingam's expertise and the care of his team.
